Coca Cola to potentially go even greener

A few posts back, I shared a recent strategic development that Coke has implemented to help with waste / recycling and generally being environmentally conscious. Well, it looks like they're about to unleash a huge move - which I truly hope they do. The idea is a paint-free can. Pure aluminum. No paint needed in manufacturing, no paint removal chemicals needed in recycling. A double win.

Below: a picture of the "naked can".

Another reason to love Coke

It looks like Coke is stepping up their responsibility a little bit: They are now using up to 30% plant matter in their 100% recyclable bottles.
With all the plastic bottles they manufacture every day, this is a huge step in the right direction.

This is a segment of a much longer, much more interesting infographic about coffee. But the pituitary gland at the bottom of this made me crack up.

So there I was...

Deep in the urban jungle. It had been hours since I had seen another human being, though not for lack of proximity. The cubicle walls seemed to close in around me and cut me off from the rest of the world. My orange speckled mug, the only unique object to designate my cube from the next, shone in the fluorescent lighting, still holding the cold remnants of yesterday's unfinished coffee. The sound of a charging UPC hummed uneasily from somewhere behind me. Over the nearest cubicle wall, the incessant click-whirrrr of a slowly failing hard drive tapped out a steady rhythm: the soundtrack to my meager existence. I wondered if its owner new of the impending doom.

As I sat there, mesmerized by the thought of a year's worth of work lost in one tragic instance, the genial new mail chime from my inbox snapped me back into reality. Crossing my fingers, I clicked on the message, dreaming it was an invitation to drop all my projects to join in on an African safari to collect the venom from a new species of deadly jumping spiders discovered near the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Or perhaps it was an adventure to the Shackleton Antarctic Ice Shelf to assist in retrieving kilometer-deep ice cores to sample the latest change in carbon dioxide deposits. With mounting joy, I read the opening line:

"Brian, I need your help."

My heart beat faster. Maybe this was it. Five years of hoping, every day, after thousands of emails. Maybe this time it would be the real thing.

And then reality came crashing down around me. Simply put, the rest of the email read:

"I need you to generate a new license for me. Please make it for 30 days. Use Unit ID 003048306ADA."

Alas, all I needed to do was generate a meager license file. A text file, a few bytes of data, ironically worth more than my entire college education. I created the file, attached the email, and sent it back to the requestor. Unable to resist the compulsive urge to save every document I generated, I found the text file I had sent, copied the subject line from the email, and clicked "save" from the header menu of the email. The Mac Finder popped up. Ah, the beautiful simplicity of this operating system. I loved it dearly. I navigated to our shared and networked server where I kept all of my data, ensured that the file was properly named and clicked save.

Then, disaster.

My computer tells the rest of the story.

I actually gave them my contact info. It'd be fun if they responded.

Fun with pictures

So I had to make a slideshow of our end-of-the-quarter Hawaiian Shirt competition for work. One of the shots included a heavily edited picture of Michael Phelps superimposed on a employee's body. Jack (my boss) wanted me to add a slide to clarify what we were looking at, so he had me make this:

But I was feeling creative so I thought I'd subtly edit the photo to better represent the picture.  Here's what I did. I don't think anyone even noticed!

Hoping it's not just a guest appearance

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who took the time to wish me a happy birthday yesterday. I received texts and calls and emails from people I never expected to even know it was my birthday, and it really made yesterday special. So thank you, all of you. You have made me feel very loved, and it means the world to me. :)

Work Break In #3

  • Sep. 2nd, 2009 at 12:25 PM
Succulent
Well, this morning's break in at 4:30am makes that the 3rd break-in / theft since we've moved to this location.

This time we have video footage of the thief picking the lock and making off with 2 laptops and a projector. One of those laptops was mine.

I am semi-lucky because not too long ago the hard drive on my work laptop died, and I just recently fixed this. So I had a relatively fresh system and I don't think I lost much, if anything. However, since I used it to access personal records, I am updating / checking any account I can access online - and that's where you come in.

If you have any thoughts about what I should remember to check or change (at least with regards to passwords) I would greatly appreciate the input.

It would still be BRRR chilly cold!

So there may have been a few of you wondering, "Where has Brian been all week?" Well, I'll tell you. I've been on a tiny island very very far away from all the people I care about, that's where. And now I'm very glad to be home and close to all of you again.

I was able to find the time to go to St. Maarten, in the Netherlands Antilles. This is in the caribbean. It was very lovely, and I've taken lots of pictures for you to see.

However, next time we all have to go.

Also, I am very tired as I am writing this right now, so I may edit the paragraph above when I wake up in the morning. The pictures stay though!

Most of you have probably figured this out, and may remember my similar post before, but this morning just after 4am, as you were sleeping the time and date read:

04:05:06 07/08/09

Pretty neat.

Alternatively, around lunchtime, you may have also felt the spooky passage of this time:

12:34:56 07/08/09

These dates will never happen again in our lifetime. Hope you savored the moment. ;)
